Mechanical Design in Practice Mechanical design yields knowledge, devices, drawings, and products that collectively form intellectual property. Each of these are protected by various legal traditions. Knowledge and techniques that have commercial value are protected as trade secrets. Devices and processes are protected by patents, while drawings and other published material are protected by copyrights. Product names and symbols are protected as trademarks.
