Conference UPDATE as of August 7

• The Final Program has been mailed to all registrants and authors. If you have not received it, please contact Sue Smith (SmithS@asmestaff.org).
• Over 180 attendees have registered for housing on campus, and UCI has opened additional dorms in Middle Earth. There are approximately 90 rooms left. Please contact Chrisine Wolynetz (CMWOLYNE@UCI.EDU) to reserve a room.
• The deadline to obtain conference rates at local hotels has passed. However, the Hyatt Regency has agreed to provide the conference rate until it sells out. Two other hotels that can provide excellent rates are:
  • The OC Airport Hilton (714) 833-9999, $69 Single, $79 double;
  • The Country Side Inn and Suites (714) 549-0300, Rooms: $65 Single, $75 Double; Suites: $75 Single, $85 Double.
• The tutorials that will be offered Saturday and Sunday are:

  • Introduction to Virtual Reality

• An Early Bird Reception is planned for Saturday Night in the Anteather Pub above the Student Center. There will be light snacks, pool tables and a cash bar.
• The Opening Reception Sunday Night is expected to be a nice affair with a 5 piece jazz group, excellent food, complimentary ice tea, lemonade, and coffee, and cash bar for beer, wine and sodas. Certificates of Appreciation for those who organized this conference will be presented during the 15 minute breaks at 7:45pm and 8:30pm.
• Tickets are limited for the Southwest Buffet (Monday evening) and the Western BBQ (Wednesday noon). Please register early for these events.

ON-LINE REGISTRATION

The estimate of the attendance guides the final stages of planning for the DET/CIE Conference. Therefore, Advanced Registration is critical to our ability to provide the best experience for the attendees. To encourage advanced registration, ASME has agreed to allow registration without payment. A cashier will be available ON-SITE during the Conference to accept payment for advanced registration.

This means that if you plan to attend in August, there is no reason to avoid using the attached on-line registration form prepared by ASME: ASME REGISTRATION FORM

Registration after July 17, 1996 will require a $25 surcharge, which, because it comes too late, does not help the conference planning effort. It simply costs you more.

The final submission for 485 papers have been received by ASME and are being converted to PDF format for the CD ROM. The papers are listed alphabetically by corresponding author in a short form, and in an expanded form that contains phone, fax, e-mail and co-authors. A draft session schedule has also been prepared that will be finalized by May 15.

Space for 10-12 exhibitors tables is available in the lobby of the UCI Student Center near the coffee break areas. The cost for an exhibit is full conference registration for one attendee plus $110 for site support. Those interested in reserving space should contact:

Air Travel:

Irvine is served by both the John Wayne/Orange County Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport. August is a popular tourist month therefore you must make you travel arrangement early to obtain special fares.

John Wayne/Orange County Airport is located two miles from UCI and is served by Alaska, America West, American, Continental, Delta, Jet America, Northwest, Southwest, TWA, United, US Air and four commuter airlines. For guests staying at hotels: contact your hotel for complimentary shuttle service to/from the airport and to/from UCI. For guests staying on campus: Taxi service is available at the baggage claim the fare is approximately $12.

Los Angeles International Airport is the major international gateway to southern California. It is located approximately 50 miles from UCI. All major U.S. and international carriers fly into LAX. Shuttle services operate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Super Shuttle (213) 775-6600 or (714) 517-6600. Upon arrival at LAX check the Ground Transportation Board for more information.

• The Hyatt Regency Irvine is off the 405 freeway at Jamboree. Heading south from Los Angeles, turn left on Jamboree, then, immediately passed the freeway, the hotel is on the right.
• To reach UCI's campus, turn right on Jamboree to Campus Drive and turn left. The next major intersection is University Drive and UCI is on the far right corner. Enter the campus at Bridge Road, which is the next intersection.
